X/1999: First Preludes In Eight Movements
Title: First Preludes In Eight Movements
Author:
papered
Fandom: X/1999
Characters/Pairing: Sumeragi Subaru, Seishirou/Subaru
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 568
Warnings: Spoilers for the ending of Tokyo Babylon and Chapter 16 of X.
Summary: Eight first experiences in Subaru's POV, after the events of Tokyo Babylon.
Notes: Finished up the X/1999 anime about a week ago, so this is my first X/1999 fanfic. Prompt words were given by the flist.
i. cigarette
The first time Subaru had tried a cigarette had been just after Hokuto's death. There's a small convenience store around the corner, and on the way home from a job, he'd purchased a pack on impulse. It's not until he unlocks the door of his apartment and looks down at the achingly familiar off-white box* that he realizes which brand he'd asked for.
ii. skin
For most of those initial nights, he wakes up with painful gasps and a thundering heart. Staring at the ceiling, the first images to fill his mind are inevitably that of golden eyes and cherry blossoms. Goosebumps rise along his arms as his skin tinges with remembered caresses and phantom kisses.
What's wrong with me?
Each time, he drags himself into the shower and scrubs until his skin is red and raw. Before long, he learns not to sleep for more than three hours at a time.
iii. hatred
The first time he meets the Sakurazukamori after his sister died, Subaru tries to kill him. He fails miserably. That night, staring at the pattern on the ceiling above his bed, he vows that he'll get his revenge, even if it costs him his life.
In the next half a decade, he almost manages to convince himself that he hates the other man.
iv. chocolate
Over the years, Subaru has learned to despise holidays and celebrations. Each one is yet another reminder of the years long gone by – the happy years he can never have again.
Why does everything I touch fall to pieces?
The night he turns twenty**, he finds himself in a bar on the less savory side of the city. His first drink is bittersweet, and the aftertaste is a mix of dark chocolate and tobacco.
v. touch
Following the day Seishirou died in his arms, Subaru receives a small apartment key in the mail. Clutching the envelope like a lifeline, he remembers the first time the older man had handed him the same key.
His fingers unconsciously trace the surface of the familiar bronze metal.
vi. smell
He finds himself in the Sakurazukamori's rooms for the first time in what feels like decades. Everything is exactly as he remembers, from the crimson cushions decorating the couch to the plant Subaru had given the man for Christmas so many years. If he closes his eyes, he can almost imagine that voice calling his name again.
Knees suddenly weak, he flees into the bedroom and collapses, burying his face into the dark red sheets. His cheeks are abruptly hot with tears.
The pillows still smell faintly of cigarettes.
vii. toxic
Being who he is now, he has no choice but to feed the tree. Now that he's gone, Subaru needs to take his place, because he can't bear to let that last piece of him die as well.
His first kill is surprisingly easy, and Subaru feels that destructive toxin that poisons everything he loves build up a little more inside him.
viii. cars
After he's gone, Subaru learns not to think. Because if he lets himself do so, like he did that first time, he knows he'll lose his mind before long. (Or maybe he's lost it already. Who knows.)
On winter nights, he sits on the steps outside his apartment and lets the racket of city cars drown out the voices in his head until his mind is a storm of meaningless noise.
* The cigarette brand mentioned is Mild Seven, specifically, Select, which is the sub-brand Seishirou smokes. Many thanks to
mithrigil.
** Twenty is the legal drinking age in Japan.
+ Feedback would be greatly appreciated.

However,
Why do everything I touch fall to pieces?
I do believe you meant does rather than do. ^^;;
Other than that, wonderful. ♥
