Home is not where you live, but where they understand you.
- Christian Morgenstern
"Tsukishiro-kun, will you go with me to the Valentine's dance next week?"
"I'm sorry, Tanahara-san, but I already have plans for that day." An apologetic smile.
The girl latched onto Yukito's arm, drawn to him like a moth to a flame. "What kind of plans can you have on Valentine's day? Are you sure you can't take just a few hours to go with me?"
In the same way that Touya has never conceived the reason for his own popularity, he understands the reason for Yukito's. Yuki is everything that Touya isn't – gentle and soft-spoken and charming.
Most of the Tomoeda female population is enamoured with him, including Touya's own sister. The younger girls bake him cakes and cookies while the older ones shoot him sickeningly flirtatious looks, trying to ask him out on dates. And no matter how much it annoys Touya, Yuki always has kind words and a ready smile in response.
And if you expected that Yuki's reputation made him unpopular with the boys, you couldn't be more wrong. Perhaps if it had been anyone else, there would have been problems – but no one could hold any hard feelings towards someone like Yukito. His talent with almost any sport has all the coaches trying to convince him to join their respective teams, and yet no one seems capable of harbouring any sort of jealousy towards the soft-spoken boy. Yukito is unendingly modest and always pleasant.
Which isn't to say, however, that his friend is constantly happy. There's a difference between pretending to be happy and actually being so, and to Touya, who knows Yuki's every expression better than he knows his own, differentiating between the two is like telling the difference between night and day.
There are little things like tone and body language – the subtle strain in his voice, the way Yuki holds himself, body slightly tense and shoulders stiff. But Touya personally thinks that the feature that's the most obvious is his friend's eyes. Yuki would make a horrible poker player because those brown pools give away his thoughts without censor. When he's genuinely happy, Yuki's eyes seem to speak his pleasure. And while his friend might have learned to fake the curve of his lips, he can't hide those honest eyes.
To Touya, they're equivalent to a loudspeaker, and he often wonders how no one else seems to see it.
Currently, Yuki's eyes are anything but smiling.
Without a second thought, Touya strode over to the pair.
The girl batted her lashes at his approach, giving him what she must have thought to be a seductive smile. "Kinomoto-kun!"
Touya narrowed his eyes before she could say another word, his gaze challenging. "Yuki's given you his response already. Now let go of him."
Blinking in surprise at his unexpected directness, she did.
Before she could recover, Touya grabbed his friend by the arm and led him out of the room. "Come on, Yuki – the archery captain was looking for you. I think they need some help this weekend."
His eyes met grateful brown ones as soon as they were out of earshot. "Thanks for that, Touya. She was so insistent - I didn't know what to say to refuse her."
"You're just too nice to everyone," he grumbled, brushing off the acknowledgement. Yuki isn't the pushy type and is too polite for his own good. But that's what Touya's around for, after all. "But what are you doing on Valentine's?"
The shorter boy shrugged. "I'm not sure yet. I was thinking maybe I could do some baking and cleaning."
"How about you come over to my house? We can work on that history project together – and Sakura'll be happy to see you." He rolled his eyes at the thought of his sister's crush.
"Are you sure? I wouldn't be intruding?"
Touya sighed. "You really need to drop the politeness, Yuki. You're practically family – why would you be intruding?"
This time, Touya doesn't need to look into those brown eyes to know that the smile he received was genuine.
Finis.

And poor Yuki; little does he know that his reluctance to cause anyone else pain will almost get him killed in the near-future.
