Dean is five the first time he wonders. Why him? His mother dying barely a year ago and his father distraught, Dean has nothing left but little Sammy.

Dean is twelve. Dumping his mother’s day gift into the trashcan after class, he wonders why God had given him this lot in life.

Dean is twenty-two. Watching Sammy walk out of the hunt, Dean wonders if he’d ever see his brother again.

Dean is twenty-eight, and he no longer wonders. The die had been cast, and there was nothing he could do but accept his lot and move on with life.

I was wondering how you would fit your die icon with Dean, but you did it. Very painfully, of course. The title...Latin, I'm guessing? *confused* What does it mean? (I'm just curious is all.)

alea iacta est means "the die is cast" ;)

(and I can't believe I remembered that...two years HS Latin and two semesters college Latin actually worth something, whoo-hoo!!!)

btw, if you meant instead what the phrase meant, it was first stated by Julius Caesar when he crossed the Rubicon, leading his armies into the Roman state, defying the Roman Senate and thereby basically declaring war against the current rulers of Rome. It started a civil war against Pompey, which Julius Caesar won. It pretty much meant there was no turning back now, once he stepped over, that was it, point of no return. The die was cast. ;)

(and in a coincidence, Caesar apparently said that 2056 years ago this month)

xD Woot, thanks for all the extra info! I've never learned Latin myself, but it sounds like such a fascinating language. SPN's kind of fueled my curiosity about it too.

Thank you! I knew the phrase "the die is cast," but I appreciate the background into it, too. :) That's really fascinating actually, and weird coincidence about Caesar saying it this month, also.

I was a bit unsure as to how to relate the die to anything at first too, but then I made the die = die is cast = lot in life = Dean Winchester connection, and the drabble kind of wrote itself. :) As for the meaning - kris4n6's got it covered. xD It's basically just the same thing as the summary.
