Summary: Edward's done a lot of things he's not proud of, but loving Bella is one thing he can't regret.
Notes: Written forfadedpresence for Christmas 2007. ♥
1. He swears later that it’s an accident, but he can’t stop himself. He pounces, lowering his lips to pale flesh, and before he knows it, the girl is limp in his arms, her eyes rolled back into her skull. Lowering her to the ground, he’s horrified at what he’s done, at what he must do – but for others to die is the only way he can survive.
Wiping his bloody lips on his sleeve, he staggers away.
2. He can feel the man’s terror in the air, and he delights in it. This is how vampires are supposed to live – not for just the blood, but also the hunt itself. The other tries to run, of course, but no mortal can outrun a vampire, and before the man realizes it, he’s on top of him. And he drinks.
The whole time, he tells himself that it’s okay, that the man deserves it. He’d followed the murderer for two blocks before attacking. But some small part of him knows that not even villains deserve to die like this.
3. As the lion collapses beneath him, he lets go, almost choking. If he’d been human, he would have vomited. But he wasn’t.
And that was the whole point.
4. The crimson flush of her skin is like the thought of water to a dying man in a desert – except it’s worse, because for him, the water is literally in front of him. And he has to resist, because it’s the only thing he can do.
He escapes for a while, thinking he could leave that tantalizing scent behind, but he’s wrong. A week later, he’s back, and he can’t help but be drawn to her.
“Hello. My name is Edward Cullen.”
5. They’re sitting in the snow together, her bundled up in sweaters and jackets and boots. The stars are out tonight, bright and visible, but to him, her beauty far outshines them.
As if feeling his gaze, she looks up and smiles.
“Happy New Year, Bella.”
And he pressed his cold lips to hers.
