"You alright, magician?"

The question was delivered in that usual gruff voice, and looking at the ninja, you would think that the response didn't concern Kurogane at all. The dark-haired man was leaning against the door, eyes focused casually on an invisible spot on the opposite wall.

And yet he'd asked. For a man who kept the talking to the minimum, his asking alone was enough to convince Fay that his answer did matter.

"I'll be fine."

It was true, he realized. He couldn't remember the last time someone had taken the time to ask him that - but it was exactly what he needed: to know that someone else cared, even if it was only a little. The numbness of the last few weeks eased slightly. It will be alright.

His responding smile was bright, and put his usual forced curve of the lips to shame.

"Thank you, Kuro-sama."
