Title: Five Times Dean Winchester Wished He Was Normal
Author: [livejournal.com profile] papered
Fandom: Supernatural
Characters/Pairing: Dean Winchester
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 400
Summary: Five disjointed moments from Dean Winchester's life that makes him wish things could have been normal.
Notes: For the [livejournal.com profile] 31_days March 23th prompt: "Heroes have it easy." Spoilers up until 3x12.

Clarifying author's notes: When I decided to write this fic for the "heroes has it easy" prompt, I was thinking of heroes in terms of popular opinion within show - ie. police officers, firefighters, etc - and not the boys themselves. Hopefully, that makes more sense.

1.

Walking into class with a broken arm and bruised ribs, he flashes the teacher a dazzling smile, excuses already slipping off his lips as he explains how he fell down the stairs in the middle of the night, all the while trying not to aggravate the wounds on his back – because not only would reopening those be a pain in the ass, it's hardly the kind of wound someone would get from a tumble. Mrs. Nielson doesn't show any doubt at his explanation, which is only proof of Dean's acting skills.

After school, he trudges home, barely making it through the door before passing out. The last thing he's aware of is Sammy's worried voice calling his name.

2.

"Jess! No, no!"

"Sam, we gotta get out!"

He puts all his strength into pushing his brother out the door, and not a moment too soon. As the chilly night air hits his face, a piece of the ceiling comes crashing down from behind, and the heat nearly scorches his back.

Afterwards, he watches the shutters slam down on Sam's face, and wishes he could have protected his brother from this for a little longer.

3.

He should've known right off the bat that something's not right, that this type of behavior is utterly out of character for John, but he's so relieved that there's finally a hope of everything being okay and he doesn't pay attention to the signs until it's too late.

Ten minutes later, the nurse makes the announcement.

"Time of death, 10:41am."

4.

She's just the way he remembers, all gentle smiles and kind eyes. The perfume she wears is almost painfully familiar – soft floral scents with a hint of citrus – and despite knowing that he's being taunted by what he can never have, he can't resist pulling her close.

"You're beautiful."

5.

There's a gun aimed at his head and Sam's pleading with Hendrickson like it's going to do any good and on top of it all, the gunshot wound on his arm is starting to hurt like a bitch. He grits his teeth against the pain and pulls himself up, realizing that he's losing blood fast and not being able to do a damn thing to stop it.

It's only the knowledge that Sammy would be screwed if he were on his own against all of those demons that keeps Dean from losing consciousness.

Nicely done. I like the different moments in time you chose to illustrate those less-than-ideal times in Dean’s life over the years.

Favorite lines:

After school, he trudges home, barely making it through the door before passing out. The last thing he's aware of is Sammy's worried voice calling his name.

Oh, Dean.

despite knowing that he's being taunted by what he can never have, he can't resist pulling her close.

"You're beautiful."

This really aches, how he knows it’s not forever, but he wants it so bad he has to indulge.

*hugs him*
