Title: Three Times Jacob Black Went Back On His Word
Author:
papered
Fandom: Twilight
Characters/Pairing: Jacob, Jacob/Beth, Bella
Rating: G
Word Count: 276
Summary: Jacob would like to say that he's never broken a promise - but that would be a lie.
Notes: Written for
secondstar for Christmas 2007.
1.
“Promise me that you’ll call as soon as you get to Quil’s house.”
“Promise.”
It was his first sleepover at a friend’s place, and Jacob had been ridiculously excited. He’d forgotten all about what he’d agreed to until his mom showed up in the middle of the night, frantic and dishevelled, wondering if he’d gotten lost or kidnapped.
That was one of his earliest memories of his deceased mother.
2.
"Jacob... why? Sam won't let you have other friends? Please, Jake. You promised. I need you!"
He’d promised her he’d always be her friend, always be there for Bella – but he hadn’t taken into account what he was. A monster.
She called. And he wanted to pick up, but he couldn’t. Not even to explain.
Finally, a week later, the phone stopped ringing.
3.
“But he’s not your whole life, either. Not anymore. Maybe he was once, but he left. And now he’s just going to have to deal with the consequence of that choice — me.”
He left. I didn’t. And I won't, Jacob vowed as he looked at Bella. You're the only one I'll ever like.
He was wrong.
Because in her eyes, he would always be second best. And while Jacob wouldn’t have minded, he knew that Bella would never settle for that. She wanted whom she considered to be the best. And she would pine away until there was nothing left.
Two years later, after graduating, he left her behind and travelled the world. And then, he found Beth, with her chocolate brown eyes that warmed up the world.
Bella? Bella who?
He couldn't say he remembered, or had any wish to.
+ Feedback would be greatly appreciated.
