Title: Three Times Jacob Black Went Back On His Word
Author: [livejournal.com profile] papered
Fandom: Twilight
Characters/Pairing: Jacob, Jacob/Beth, Bella
Rating: G
Word Count: 276
Summary: Jacob would like to say that he's never broken a promise - but that would be a lie.
Notes: Written for [livejournal.com profile] secondstar for Christmas 2007.

1.

“Promise me that you’ll call as soon as you get to Quil’s house.”

“Promise.”

It was his first sleepover at a friend’s place, and Jacob had been ridiculously excited. He’d forgotten all about what he’d agreed to until his mom showed up in the middle of the night, frantic and dishevelled, wondering if he’d gotten lost or kidnapped.

That was one of his earliest memories of his deceased mother.

2.

"Jacob... why? Sam won't let you have other friends? Please, Jake. You promised. I need you!"

He’d promised her he’d always be her friend, always be there for Bella – but he hadn’t taken into account what he was. A monster.

She called. And he wanted to pick up, but he couldn’t. Not even to explain.

Finally, a week later, the phone stopped ringing.

3.

“But he’s not your whole life, either. Not anymore. Maybe he was once, but he left. And now he’s just going to have to deal with the consequence of that choice — me.”

He left. I didn’t. And I won't, Jacob vowed as he looked at Bella. You're the only one I'll ever like.

He was wrong.

Because in her eyes, he would always be second best. And while Jacob wouldn’t have minded, he knew that Bella would never settle for that. She wanted whom she considered to be the best. And she would pine away until there was nothing left.

Two years later, after graduating, he left her behind and travelled the world. And then, he found Beth, with her chocolate brown eyes that warmed up the world.

Bella? Bella who?

He couldn't say he remembered, or had any wish to.

Liz, I think you made me like Jacob. Just a little bit, however. I think I like him with Beth, that could be it. Like, bid your farewell to Bella, Jakie-poo, and Julia will love you forever. :D

I liked it a lot! The second one is my favorite, I think.

I love it! Especially the first one--I like fics about characters' lives before the books, it makes me feel like I know them even better. Can I make one little (hopefully) constructive comment? The last two lines-"Bella? Bella who? He couldn't say he remembered, or had any wish to." I just don't see Jake ever forgetting Bella or how he felt for her, it would just be overshadowed by Beth. Like Sam still feels bad about what happened with Leah, and Bella won't ever forget Jake.

But really, I did like the whole thing a lot. Keep writing!

I like this Beth. I like her very much.
She's officially my new favourite character.
xD

I love the first one about how he forgot to call his mum.
Too cute!

i love it! i like the thought of jake getting his own happy ending, because even though i'm not a j/b person at all, i still really want jake to be happy :D

Aw, I like how Jacob got his happy ending.
I liked how it was a few years away, though. Like he needed to suffer a bit before anything good could happen.
Which sounds mean, but that's really how life is. Mean.

This was great! I love how you started out with young Bella. And yay, Jacob found happiness!
