"Kiss me," she breathed, her heart thundering, and then he was leaning forward, pulling her close with the desperation of a drowning man who'd finally broken through the surface of the water to grasp at his salvation.
Outside the room, Hermione could hear Professor McGonagall calling for all students to return to their common rooms. She knew that Harry and Ron must have been with the Headmaster already, finishing up last minute preparations for the confrontation with Voldemort that would happen within hours. And undoubtedly, they would be wondering where she'd gone.
The war was raging around them, but for this last moment, she was here. With Draco.
She wondered how much longer it would take before her heart's pounding broke her ribcage.
Finally, the blond pulled back, a hiss leaving his lips as he grasped his left arm. Hermione could see the reddened skin around the angry-looking Dark Mark.
"I have to go." Draco pulled the cloak he wore tighter around himself, silver mask already in hand. His gaze had the undertone of steel as he looked at her. "And Hermione – just in case, if something happens, I want you to know that I –"
She cut him off with a finger against his lips. "Tell me later," she replied fiercely, trying to convey everything she wanted but didn't have the time to say in a single glance. Taking a small step back, she took in all of him, wanting to imprint this moment in her memory – the balled fists tightened in determination, those high cheekbones and pureblood features, the way Draco carried himself with the grace gained from a childhood of etiquette lessons despite the tension in his stance.
Had there truly been a time when she'd felt nothing but dislike towards this boy? It felt like several lifetimes had passed since then.
Suddenly noticing that her hands were trembling, Hermione angrily closed them into fists. Biting her lips, she pulled the Slytherin close one final time before letting go.
Her words carried through the empty room long after the door had slammed after the blond.
"Stay safe."
